MORRISSEY WOWS HOLLYWOOD

British rock star MORRISSEY returned to the Hollywood Bowl last night (08Jun07) for the first time in 15 years and was almost floored by a succession of stage invaders.

Ten fans beat security measures and scrambled onto the Bowl stage - to hug, kiss and manhandle the former The Smiths star, who has become an unlikely cult figure in Los Angeles, thanks mainly to a huge Latin fanbase.

The sold out Hollywood show was filmed for an upcoming concert movie DVD, but Morrissey didn't let his over-eager, stage-invading fans ruin the evening, often chuckling as they found clever ways to get as close to their hero as possible.

The Brit, who called himself "an old harpsichord that nobody ever plays" during the show, performed a string of new tunes, as well as solo classics such as Everyday Is Like Sunday and First Of The Gang To Die and Smiths favourites How Soon Is Now, Girlfriend In A Coma and The Boy With A Thorn In His Side.

He ended the two-encore show by ripping off his shirt for a second time following a stirring performance of Smiths classic There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.

And the spectacle of a filled Hollywood Bowl wasn't lost on the singer, who announced his gratitude to fans who had stuck by him since his last show there.

Prior to his arrival on stage, Morrissey treated fans to a slideshow of his heroes and heroines in action - with vintage and rare footage of the New York Dolls, Brigitte Bardot, Alan Bates and James Dean in action beamed onto a large screen. The James Dean footage was from a silent wardrobe fitting sequence from the tragic actor's East of Eden movie.

Link wiht picture

There was once scene involving a broken bone I skipped past and...I had to mute it a few times just to make it less scary. Fun!

Florida exodus? Statistics show residents starting to leave for less costly locales
By Paul Owers
South Florida Sun-Sentinel

January 11, 2007

For the first time in 30 years, United Van Lines Inc. says it moved more people out of Florida than in, and analysts see that as a sign that consumers are looking elsewhere for a cheaper slice of life.

The nation's largest moving company reported 16,212 inbound shipments to Florida last year and 17,019 outbound shipments. United moved more people to Florida in each year from 1999 to 2004, but the number of inbound moves fell in 2005, spokeswoman Jennifer Bonham said.

The study isn't scientific, but it does underscore a recent trend in which fed-up Floridians are moving to other parts of the country, in part to escape rising property taxes and insurance rates.

United's report shows that North Carolina, Oregon and South Carolina were the top destination states in 2006. Michigan, hit hard by automobile industry layoffs, North Dakota and New Jersey were the states that saw the most people leave.

The housing boom brought more people to the Sunshine State at the start of the decade, but the run-up in home values during the past five years sent property-tax rates soaring. Many residents now say they can't afford to move elsewhere in Florida because of the huge hit they'd take on taxes.

What's more, busy hurricane seasons in 2004 and 2005 led to massive rate hikes from the state's largest home insurance companies.

"It all just pushed us past the breaking point," David Levin, a Delray Beach-based housing consultant, said Wednesday.

A couple of years ago, Paul Mount saw an early-morning infomercial about cheap land in Tennessee. He and his wife ultimately moved there from Wellington in July 2005.

They live in a log-cabin home on two acres near Chattanooga. In Wellington, their property taxes were $9,300 a year; their tax bill in Tennessee is $1,100.

The threat of hurricanes, rising utility rates and the cost of homeowner insurance also convinced the couple that they should leave Florida.

"We just got tired of it," said Mount, 52, a former Broward County sheriff's deputy. "Everything is financial. The state of Florida is just going crazy."

Recent U.S. census figures show that Florida gains 1,000 people a day while losing 400, said Grant Thrall, a professor of business geography at the University of Florida. But some residents clearly are reconsidering because of the cost of living and other factors, Thrall said.

"People move to where their well-being is going to be the greatest," he said. "Many people find the urban-built environment of Florida totally disgusting."

As Floridians struggle with housing affordability and wages that have not kept pace with the cost of living, other states are aggressively trying to capture the Northeast migration that Florida once relied on for its growth, said Levin, the Delray Beach housing consultant.

"They're eating our lunch," he said.

Although Florida remains attractive compared with cold-weather states, "it is losing some of its luster," said Charles Longino, a Wake Forest University professor who studies the exodus of Florida senior citizens to North Carolina.

United Van Lines, based in suburban St. Louis, has tracked shipment patterns on a state-by-state basis since 1977. Its 2006 study is based on 227,254 interstate household moves among the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C.

Paul Owers can be reached at powers@sun-sentinel.com or 561-243-6529.

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/state/orl-bk-leaving01112007,0,824452.story?coll=orl-home-headlines

It wasn't long before more than a dozen were spotted along the darkened streets near downtown. The group was quickly hauled in and locked up.

There were no Johns looking for an illicit rendezvous in this roundup. But there was a Miles, and a Bing, and a Jake.

The suspects: dogs.

The charge: decimating the cat population in three downtown neighborhoods.

In a span of four months, there had been more than four dozen confirmed cat killings and maulings. Outraged cat owners demanded that something be done, so Seminole County's Animal Services Department put together a sting that shifted patrols into the early morning hours, when most of the attacks had taken place, and focused on the hardest-hit areas.

"As soon as we put an officer in the area starting at 5 a.m., that's when we starting seeing results," said Mike Wittmer, animal-services director.

While no one has positively identified any of the 16 dogs picked up in the past two weeks as cat killers, reports of attacks have dwindled to none, Wittmer said.

"I think we've identified part of the problem," he said. "I think those dogs are part of the problem."

The penalty is harsh. Half the rounded-up dogs have been euthanized, Wittmer said, because they were not wearing tags and no one claimed them. Six others were returned to their owners, and two are up for adoption.

Those sent home essentially are on probation.

"We're being pretty hard on people who own the dogs we're picking up," he said.

In addition to paying fines and an impound fee, the owners were put on notice that animal-control officers would be knocking on their doors the next time a cat attack or loose dog is reported in the area.

"We're going to those addresses first and asking to see those dogs," he said.

That would suit Ted Newsom just fine.

Ashes, Newsom's pit-bull mix, bolted from his home on East 21st Street about 4 p.m. one day. By the time Newsom and his son hopped into their Jeep and drove around the corner, an animal-control officer had already grabbed the dog.

After two days at the pound, Ashes was released back to Newsom.

"I would actually welcome them coming to my house," Newsom said. "I'm 99 percent sure Ashes would be asleep on the couch. I don't have a halo over my head as a pet owner, but I make an honest effort to make sure my dog is contained."

Wittmer was never convinced that the wide-ranging attacks were the work of one or two dogs, he said. Yet witnesses consistently described a black dog and a dirty yellow one fleeing the scene of several attacks.

Those descriptions could easily match Jeff Bonkowski's dogs, Miles and Bing.

The two Labrador retrievers got loose twice in the past month, Bonkowski said, though he insists he does not let them roam. They dug under the backyard fence of his home on South Laurel Avenue, he said.

But Bonkowski is not about to let his dogs take the rap for all the attacks. Many occurred when Miles and Bing were with Bonkowski inside the house or out of the area, he said.

"I do sympathize with them that they did lose their cats," he said. "But it is a two-way street. I'm not condoning any dogs attacking cats, but people have their cats out, too. If people didn't have their cats out, this wouldn't be a problem."

Molly Pflueger said both her cats were killed in her backyard. Her son identified Bonkowski's dogs as those running from the house after one attack. But the dogs were returned to Bonkowski because no one saw them attack the cat.

Pflueger said she would keep an eye on Bonkowski's house to make sure the dogs remain contained.

"If they get out, they're going to kill again," she said.

"stray" dogs are killing owner's pets.

No pet should be left loose outside. Every pet should be spayed and neutered.

And it's Wes Craven's first film (though, do I find any Wes Craven film "scary?").

Not scary, not creepy, not gory, not messed up....the rape scene is disturbing, yes. But it's a rape scene. The house isn't even...a scary house and is not in the movie much at all...also it's like a ranch style house, not the looming gothic one pictured in the movie poster.

It was god-awful AWFUL.
